Intercom Repair
Last updated September 2026 by the Douglas Security System team, licensed and insured NYC intercom specialists with over 35 years of experience.
When your intercom stops working, tenants can’t let in guests, deliveries, or emergency services, and the calls to the super or management office start right away. Douglas Security System (DSS) repairs intercoms in apartment buildings, co-ops, condos, offices, storefronts, and private houses across all five boroughs and Long Island.
We’ve been repairing intercom and security systems in New York for over 35 years, from our office at 1541 E 46th Street in Brooklyn. Our technicians work on old audio buzzer systems and modern video intercoms from Aiphone, Comelit, Elvox, Leedan, 2Easy, and other brands. Every repair starts with a free quote, and we only recommend a new system when a repair doesn’t make sense.

In New York City, a working intercom isn’t only a convenience. Under the NYC Housing Maintenance Code, buildings with eight or more apartments built or converted after January 1, 1968, must keep a working intercom with two-way voice communication and a door release from each apartment. A broken system can lead to tenant complaints and violations. Read our NYC intercom requirements guide for details.
There’s also a safety side. When the intercom is down, tenants often prop the front door open or buzz in anyone who rings. That defeats the purpose of a locked entrance. The faster the system is fixed, the faster the building is secure again. That’s why we treat intercom repair calls as urgent and schedule a technician as quickly as we can.
Most intercom failures come down to a handful of causes. Here are the problems we repair most often, and what usually causes them:
In pre-war buildings, decades-old copper wiring running through damp basements and risers is one of the most common causes of trouble. We test the wiring along with the equipment, so we fix the real cause instead of just the symptom.
Intercoms rarely fail all at once. Watch for these early warning signs, because fixing a small problem now usually costs less than a full breakdown later:
If you notice any of these, call us for an inspection before the system goes down completely.

For many tenants, the door buzzer is the intercom. If the buzzer doesn’t sound, sounds weak, or the door won’t release when they press the button, the building’s entry system isn’t doing its job.
Door buzzer repairs usually involve the apartment unit, the door strike at the entrance, the power supply, or the wiring between them. We test each part, replace what failed, and check every apartment before we leave. On older 5-, 4-, and 3-wire systems, we carry common parts like the PK-543A intercom amplifier and handset-style apartment stations, so many buzzer repairs are finished in one visit.
For a full troubleshooting guide, see our door buzzer repair page.
We repair almost every type of intercom found in NYC buildings:
If your system is discontinued and parts are no longer available, we’ll tell you honestly and show you the most cost-effective upgrade. Many buildings can move to a Comelit video intercom that works alongside the existing intercom units, so you don’t have to rewire the whole building. See our intercom products.
The price depends on what failed, the type of system, and the condition of the wiring. Here are average NYC price ranges so you know what to expect:
These are average NYC prices, not a fixed price list. For installation and upgrade prices, see our intercom system cost guide. Your final price depends on what our technician finds. We inspect the system first and give you a clear quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

We don’t push new systems when a repair will do. Here’s how we help you decide:
When it’s a close call, we give you both prices so you can choose what fits your budget.
If replacement makes more sense, see our video intercom installation service.
A few simple habits help an intercom last longer and fail less often:
A few quick checks help us fix your intercom faster:
While you wait, put up a sign with a phone number so visitors and deliveries can still reach tenants.
Yes. A repair visit is a good time to look at the rest of the entrance. Many buildings add a security camera over the front door, a keypad or key fob reader for tenants and staff, or a smart lock on a side door while our technician is already on site. Doing it together saves a second visit and makes sure the intercom, door strike, cameras, and access control all work as one system.
We’ll only suggest what makes sense for your building, and you’ll get a separate price for each item so you can choose. See our security cameras and the Aiphone AC-10S keypad.

If you manage several buildings, you need a repair company that keeps things simple. We give each building its own quote, explain what we found in plain words, and tell you what we fixed and what we recommend watching. That makes it easier to plan budgets, answer board questions, and respond to tenants.
We work with managing agents, co-op and condo boards, landlords, and supers across NYC. Whether it’s one dead apartment unit or a building-wide failure, you get the same DSS technicians and the same clear process.
Most single intercom repairs in NYC, like replacing one apartment unit or fixing a door release, cost about $250 to $600. Replacing an entry panel or power supply usually runs $500 to $1,500, and a dead lobby panel with a new transformer runs about $1,200 to $2,800. These are average NYC prices, and we give you a free quote after we inspect your system.
Call us as soon as the problem starts. We treat a broken intercom or door release as urgent and schedule a technician as quickly as we can. We carry common parts, so many repairs are finished in one visit.
When only one apartment is affected, the cause is usually that apartment’s unit or handset, or the wire running to it. Replacing one apartment station is often the quickest fix.
A building-wide failure usually points to the entrance panel, the power supply or transformer, or the amplifier. We test each part to find the one that failed.
Yes. Intermittent problems usually come from loose connections, a failing power supply, or wiring that reacts to moisture. We test the system under normal use to find the cause.
The door strike, the door release relay, or the wiring to the strike has usually failed. We test and replace the part that isn’t working.

Yes. We repair older 5-, 4-, and 3-wire audio systems and brands like Aiphone, Comelit, Elvox, Leedan, and 2Easy. If parts are no longer made, we’ll explain your upgrade options.
If one part failed, repair is usually the better value. If the system keeps breaking or parts are discontinued, an upgrade often costs less over time. We give you both prices when it’s a close call.
In many buildings, yes. Our Comelit video intercom works alongside your existing intercom units, so tenants keep their apartment units and can also answer the door from their cellphones.

Tell us which apartments are affected, what still works, whether the door release works, and the brand of your system if you know it. Photos of the entrance panel help too.
